One dish that you’ll find among almost every Thanksgiving dinner table this Thursday is stuffing. With all the great ways to make stuffing, there’s no doubt that there are varying opinions on what ingredients or cooking methods make the best stuffing. The name alone is worth debating as there are some across the country that refer to this Thanksgiving staple as dressing. Stuffing or dressing, it’s all good to me no matter what name it’s called by. Just pass me a big serving and I’ll eat it with a big smile! With so many people having differing tastes and views of the perfect stuffing, Swanson Broth is inviting people across the country to take a side in the Great Stuffing Debate!
Anytime that I’ve ever roasted a turkey, I’ve made the stuffing separate. Why? I like to bake the turkey after brining it and stuffing it with aromatic herbs and spices for a more juicy, flavorful turkey. Sometimes, I’ll add some toasted nuts and put it in the oven for a few minutes so it gets a little crispy and have good crunch value. My husband isn’t big on stuffing, so I make it just to my liking with french bread, mushrooms, onions, celery, seasonings, fresh herbs, and of course, Swanson Organic Chicken Broth!
Here’s step by step on how I make stuffing in the slow cooker for our family meals:
Start out with the following ingredients: 1/2 cup butter, 1 onion, 1 cup chopped celery, 2 minced garlic cloves, 1/4 cup fresh parsley, 12 oz sliced fresh mushrooms, 6 cups dry cubed french bread, 1 tsp poultry seasoning, 1/2 tsp dried sage, 1 tsp dried thyme, 1/2 tsp dried marjoram, 1/2 tsp salt, 1/2 tsp ground black pepper, pinch of cayenne, 1-1/2 cups chicken broth, and 2 eggs- beaten.
Saute the onion, celery, and mushrooms in the butter straight in the slow cooker with browning function until onions are translucent and veggies are tender. You can also do this in a pan on the stove top if you don’t have a browning function on your slow cooker.
Stir in cubed bread, seasonings, and herbs.
Add Swanson Chicken Broth and stir until well blended and moistened.
Stir beaten eggs until well blended.
Cook on low for 4-5 hours.
