Our family just adores the Air Bud and Buddies movies as they tend to be family friendly and have a good moral to the story. What small child could resist watching the cute golden retriever dog and puppies in action? With the Super Bowl coming this weekend and Air Bud: Golden Receiver being released to DVD on February 2nd, this DVD is a good choice to bring home for the kids to enjoy while the grown ups are engrossed in the big game and get in the football spirit!
In the first Air Bud movie, we got to see Josh adjust to the loss of his father and add a new family member (Buddy, a stray Golden Retriever dog) that helps him overcome the grief from the death of his father. Buddy happens to be a natural when it comes to sports and shined as the superstar of the school basketball team in the first flick. This sequel carries on with the family moving on and Josh’s mom starting a relationship with the town’s veterinarian. Josh isn’t too pleased by this situation and doesn’t know how to deal with it and therefore, decides to join the football team as a form of distraction. By coincidence, Buddy, ends up attending one of Josh’s football games and ends up playing by his owner’s side. Thanks to Budd, things start turning around for the team who was previously on a losing streak and the team find themselves in the state championship. It doesn’t take long for this canine to grab the attention of two Russian bad guys who decide to nab Buddy in hopes to make him the star of their circus, putting the team’s chance at victory at stake.
My children couldn’t get enough of Air Bud: Golden Receiver! They found Buddy to be quite the amazing athlete and wondered if we could ever train a dog to do that. The kids giggled every time he’d perform his victory dance and were in awe of his athletic abilities. While my own children couldn’t relate to what Josh was experiencing with the loss of his father and how he has to come to grips with the reality of his mom dating, they did sympathize with him and hoped the best for him during the movie. The Russian bad guys were a little over the top for me, but seemed to provide good comedic relief for my kids who found them to be silly and full of nonsense. Overall, I think they showed what happens when a family has to move on from a death of a loved one, the new relationships that surface, and how a good friend can help you in the transition (even a furry one) in a tasteful manner.

I have never heard of Air Bud. It sounds like a movie I would enjoy watching with all of my children including the teenager. She still likes stuff like that.
