This is an email I’ve written to GE in response to a problem I have with my microwave:

After reading the complaints on the Consumer Affairs web site, I am appalled at the response of GE to these issues. And then to further discover that GE paid a million dollar fine for not reporting fire issues from one of it’s microwaves, it seems even more doubtful.

I am very disgusted with my GE appliance and the company in general. After only 18 months it is peeling paint into my food. And GE’s answer is to “repaint it”……..give me a break. You are talking about taking down the appliance (it’s over the range and very heavy), getting in there and scraping, sanding, and painting (outside of the house). With no guarantees of the repainting job even working. If it is already chipping in one spot, I’m sure it will continue over the entire inside of the appliance. It is a defective and poor quality appliance. I’m not going to pay any GE repairman to come out and charge me hundreds of dollars. The only solution is to replace it.

On TV, GE pays millions of dollars to give appliances away on shows like Oprah and a lot of the cooking shows. But if a “regular” person gets one that is defective…….oh well…..tough luck…….go buy some paint. It is pretty ridiculous. I think your million dollar marketing money could be better used to satisfy and keep existing customers.

I am very concerned with the health risk this has put on my entire family. I will see if there is a class action law suit to which I can join. We now are covering all food that goes into the microwave until we can decide what to do about it. I will probably have to go out and buy a new “none GE” microwave. That seems to be the only thing that company’s listen to these days……law suits. Very sad.

I have owned many microwaves over the years and have never had one go bad so quickly. Usually I end up donating them to charity when I change them out. But I can not even donate this one……it will have to go in the trash. Not very good for the environment (perhaps some of the “green” movements would be interested in this). Very sad for your company. You will lose me as a permanent customer. I’m sure I am not the only one. Undoubtedly you will lose thousands. This is a very competitive economy. It is a sad day for General Electric.

This microwave should be on a recall list. GE should be standing behind this product and replacing any that are peeling paint into people’s food. I’m sure if I ordered the replacement paint……it would not give me permission to eat it. I’m sure it is toxic. Maybe you should prepare a meal of peeling paint for the President of the company and his beloved family. I’m sure they would enjoy it. If it gives them cancer…..oh well…..order some spray paint to fix it.

Shame on GE. Shame on them for not taking care of their customers. Shame on them. Fool me once…shame on you………fool me twice…….shame on me. I won’t be fooled again by GE.

If you have any other solution outside of replacing it free of charge, you should not bother replying to me. I will take my own action any way that I can find. I will look for a class action law suit, not buy GE appliances in the future, and generate any adverse publicity that I have at my disposal. Those are the only things I can do. But these things will hurt GE. And if you multiply that by thousands, it will definitely hurt GE.

    Sincerely,
    Diane Nicholls
