Our chicken coop filled with Cornish Cross Chickens for our winter supply of chicken.
Yes, they smell awful and the worse part is that my garden plot is directly behind the coop so I’m constantly smelling them when I garden. Not pleasant! We plan on building some brick raised beds soon on another spot of property so I don’t have to endure the stench of chickens any longer!
Despite the smell, the kids love helping feed and water the chickens. Believe it or not, they love the butchering process as well. It’s a little disturbing, lol. They must be country kids!
We raise them from chicks until time to butcher. We hope to build another coop for laying hens in the near future.
Happy WW! Leave your link so I can check your photos out and leave a comment!

Wow, I can’t believe you do that all your self. That’s awesome!
My kids loved doing that. Guess it’s better when ya don’t have to

Okay, where have I been? I didn’t know you did this… or did I forget? Well… hmmm? That’s really cool. When my mother was growing up in Maryland her family raised chickens and she remembers what it was like having them and slaughtering them for meals. Do you sell yours or use them for family? I think teaching children about farming and the skills involved is very good character building. That’s great. And you garden?! I don’t have the patience for gardening. Actually I wouldn’t mind if someone started one for me and I just had to keep it up. Lazy, huh?
Good luck with getting everything repositioned so you don’t have to sniff the “aroma” any longer.
That is so cool! I’ve wanted chickens but everyone always says they stink so bad.
Wow, that’s so cool that you raise your own chickens! That’s a really cool coop too!
We have laying hens, a couple ducks and a couple geese. They do stink really bad. Happy WW J!
they are definitely country kids! lol. I would’ve grossed out if I were them ’cause I was an in town kiddie. ha ha
That’s cool, and that reminds me of when I was a kid when we had a chicken coop. Those little brown hens we had sure were protective of their eggs LOL
You all are super brave, chickens are some stinky.LOL
Very cool, even though they really do stink! My son loves being the one to go in my parent’s chicken coop to get the eggs, but I can’t stand it.
Oh, and my son loves helping get animals loaded when they go to get butchered (even though he knows what’s happening). I agree, it’s disturbing, but he is such a farm kid too!
The 2nd picture says it all. When I saw the first one, I was wrinkling my nose then I laughed when I saw the 2nd one. That’s great that they help out even with the awful smell.
Cool! My grandparents raise chickens, and I loved it as a kid!
Wow! I’m impressed that you raise your own chickens. I don’t blame you for moving your garden.
Thanks for the memory! The last time I talked to my husband before he died he told me I could raise chickens on our planned farm(as long as I kept them away from him and his beloved horses)! I love chickens, smell and all! God bless!
LOOKS LIKE FUN
You are so lucky! I really want to have chickens with a coop also
My girls would cry at slaughtering a chicken. Happy WW!
The second photo cracks me up; with your little boy holding his nose. I love to eat chickens and cows, but I can’t bring myself to see where they live that closely. I think I wouldn’t be able to eat them anymore. LOL.
Happy WW from Sara @ The Mostly Wordless Wednesday H.Q.!
I am such a city girl! I would totally NOT survive.
We’d like to get some chickens in a few years. Can you recommend some good books or sites on raising chickens?
Hi,
Nice post and pics of the chicken coop. I would like to say that chicken coops must be built always bit larger than actual required size. This would make them feel free and moce around within the coop and thus get some exercise too. This would keep them healthy, which would lead to fresh eggs and more profit

Wow… Really great post!
Have a fantastic day!
